One of the duties of the modern musician is to re-describe the world in melody, chords, rhythms, timbres, form and lyrics. One of the duties of a citizen in a reasonably democratic society is to be reasonably dissatisfied. This course traces both of those duties through folk, jazz, rhythm-and-blues, rock-n-roll, R&B, metal, hip hop and pop music from 1870 until today.
