FALL 2012  Course Description:

Social Sculpture is any project—3D sculpture, Event, Performance, Drawing, Concert—that needs an audience to complete it. Social Sculpture changes an audience and the audience changes the work. Social Sculpture will change you, the artist, and the world.

This is the definition of Social Sculpture we will use and consider during this semester. We will explore Social Sculpture broadly to include Interactive Sculpture, Performance, and Performative Events and Happenings. Together we will look at many examples through presentations and screenings. We will also read essays and reviews on the subject to better understand the dialogue surrounding this kind of work.

By the end of the semester you will be comfortable making Social Sculpture, thinking and talking about Social Sculpture. By December, you will understand where it fits in your own creative life … because that is the most important aspect of this class. You and your life and your art.

Bottom line: How will art transform your life and the lives around you?
