This course will examine the texts and contexts of Broadway’s longest-running hit plays in order to better understand how the American theatre functions as a form of popular culture. Combining historical research, textual analysis, and cultural theory, students will analyze and discuss the most successful Broadway plays from the past 100 years from artistic, cultural, and ideological perspectives.
