This course is an introductory directing class on the art and craft of directing and staging a play. We will examine diverse approaches to staging and direction, as well as text analysis and rehearsal techniques. Using a range of plays to choose from, we will investigate all aspects of the director’s craft, from preparation, research, meeting with collaborators, dramaturgical work, to the rehearsal process. Different rehearsal methods and styles will be investigated and student direction critiqued in the spirit of learning the nuts and bolts of the director’s craft while also uncovering and releasing one’s own vision of a play.

Required for students with a directing concentration; open to other majors with junior standing.
