This course surveys the historical significance of printmaking, from cave engravings to digital media. We will cover the evolution of printed and editioned art throughout history and its influence on culture in Europe, Asia, and the Americas. We will look at significant examples of work in all techniques, including relief, intaglio, lithography, monotype, screenprint, artists' books, and digital printing. The focus will be on the artistic use and development of the medium, but we will also address its function as a means of dissemination of information and communication, paying particular attention to its historical context. As a course designed for studio artists, emphasis will be placed on the relevance of these historical precedents to artistic practice today.
