An organization is essentially a group with a specific identity or membership where the members share a common purpose and work collectively toward that goal. It can be made up of a small group of people, e.g., domestic violence shelter or Sociology Club, or it can be large, e.g., colleges, religions, or corporations. Social organizations are key structures in most societies and this term refers to the interdependence of the parts and the interactions of groups. We will examine the practices, processes, and interests served by some of today’s dominant organizations. And, we will explore the politics of organizations as related to various social hierarchies such as race, class, gender, sexuality, and ability.
