Changes in the status of women in Islamic societies are examined, with an emphasis on the diversity of both Muslim communities and the interpretation of sacred texts. Topics include the dominance of the male voice in interpretation; the “gendered” approach to Islam in Western societies; the economic and political impact of colonialism, the Cold War, globalization, and the Muslim elite; and the struggle by feminists and other women’s rights groups.
