It can readily be said that there is no area of the law today that is more pervasive in our everyday health, economic well-being and other areas of our lives than that dealing with safeguarding our environment . Yet, a relatively short forty-five years ago, there were almost no regulations protecting our natural resources (e.g. water, air and elimination of hazardous wastes).
This course will prepare the student who may have little or no law background with a basic introduction to the study of law and the court system. The creation by the United States of governmental agencies to enact rules and guidelines will then be studied as the strongest mechanism to oversee these protocols as they apply to the business and private sectors of our nation. These more modern agencies and their executive enforcement abilities will be contrasted with the inadequate original enforcement mechanisms afforded parties adversely affected by environmental violations prior to the 1970s. There will also be a segment dedicated to environmental concerns in real estate and other business transactions seated in land use and planning concepts. Finally, the individual statutory schemes and the regulations adopted in each group of natural resources sought to be protected will be broken down and their purposes and provisions studied in detail.
