Course Description:
This course explores what art communicates to us about how our brain works and what the brain can tell us about the ways we perceive and conceive art. We will look into brain functioning related to topics based in both visual and performing arts; the science of vision; perception of motion, mirror neurons and imitation; the making of metaphor; perception of time; and the neural basis of narrative, anticipation and memory.

Our class discussions will center on the emerging field of neuroesthetics, which explores the neural basis of creativity. We will develop an understanding of how the brain works as a source for both the appreciation and the creation of visual and performing arts including dance, music, theatre and film.
