This scene study class focuses on characterization and motivation, with emphasis on interpretation, finding compelling choices for the actor, and the “truth of the moment.” Individual and group class exercises, discussion and written reflections of both live performance and readings, and in-depth prepared work on diverse scenes from contemporary theater are used to deepen the actor’s ability to execute honest and purposeful stage acting and communication.

This is a studio-intensive course with each student collaborating on, rehearsing and performing three increasingly layered prepared projects. Actor training will involve the embodiment of physical behavior and the visceral use of language to develop and refine character. Practical tools explored in class are intended to offer the student greater vocal, physical and imaginative freedom and clarity, as well as formidable text analysis skills.

The course depends on all involved to draw from their own wells of “energy, imagination, and courage” to maintain a supportive and safe space to discover, risk and growth creatively.
