Topics include the California Gold Rush, the significance of the Northwest Land Ordnances, the Louisiana Purchase, the Mexican Cession, and the Oklahoma Land Rush. Students consider the influence of the “Wild West” on the American character and explore racial and gender stereotyping in American literature. In addition to readings, traditional Hollywood “westerns” are compared with more modern portrayals of the West.
