Since the dawn of cinema, religion has had an enduring hold on filmmakers’ creative and spiritual imaginations. Religion’s narrative and symbolic power in movies made in the last century is examined through films and critical readings. Students analyze Judeo-Christian-Islamic traditions, perceptions and imagery inspired by sacred sites and scripture. Films include cinematic masterpieces, popular movies, silent films, and indie features. 4 credits.
